Course Length: 8 hours

Time: 9 AM to 5 PM

Place: Range 360, Miller MO. Sign-in at Hunt’s Hardware & Guns at 205 E Main Street Miller, MO 65707. Please try to arrive by 0845.

Description:  

Attendees will:

*Gain a thorough understanding of maps and their various grid types, coordinates, scales, and topography
*Learn about and use several types of compasses
*Be better able to navigate difficult terrain while maintaining an accurate course heading
*Establish and record a solid and useable pace-count
*Learn how to figure out where you are (for certain!) when you’re not sure.
*Locate and navigate to any position on a map, using only a map and compass.
Participants will spend part of the day learning skills in a classroom environment, and the rest of the day will be dedicated to testing their skills out in the wild.
Required materials:
*Baseplate or “Orienteering” compass; Best if it has declination adjustment and a sighting mirror, but any baseplate compass will do.
*COMPASSES CAN BE PURCHASED AT CLASS FROM $15-$40. Let us know when you register if you’ll be needing a compass.*
*Hiking shoes or boots and weather-appropriate outdoor clothing.
*A small day pack or Camelbak
*A small notepad, pen and pencil.
*A small first aid kit is always recommended.
MAPS WILL BE PROVIDED AT CLASS.

When you leave this course, you will be competent and confident in your ability to navigate without the aid of any digital device–just a good old map and compass.
